Member, Colin Jones, has brought to our attention the above production by fellow Member, Paul Curran. Congratulations to Paul for some rave reviews – see below. Members may remember a stimulating talk by Paul in June 2000 that introduced many of us to a new realm of opera, the Russian repertoire, including The Invisible City of Kitezh (1907) by Rimsky-Korsakov.
OPERA (ITALY) : Tannhäuser a lucid concept, psychologically attentive to the develpoment of the characters with a brilliant cast all acting superbly. Visually a fascianating fest for the eyes. A magnificently hit bullseye! An intelligent example of modern directing... Exactly the path one wold like La Scala to pursue: done with due respect to the traditions of the house at their very highest level, within a bold new artistic policy of the Scala. Curran/Knight's production (but truly and appropriately also that of the lighting designer, David Martin Jacques, creator of a breutifully evocative and magical fairy tale, full of moving and at times terrifying atmosphere).. Dense, and rarefied... this production flows with a powerful and expressive fluidity.
24 ORE: A triumph! (This new production is) seen through the eyes of a director who is little more than a boy himself - a director of great and subtle sensitivity. Set in the 1930s, there is no medaeival heraldry here nor is it full of modern ridiculous symbolism - this young man offered a direct and refined reading with few resources and a budget, according to Mauro Meli (artistic director) of less than that of a rental! Scrupulously directed, modern and lucid, it moved along beautifully and was free of any old fashioned statue-like posing which is so ludicrous today.
MILANO MUSICALE: Paul Curran's intelligent direction moved both soloists and the masses superbly in Kevin Knight's sets and costumes. A balanced and beatiful production without any unnecessary vulgarity. What can one say? If only we could have more productions like this!
