We had anticipated that this recital would showcase the talents of some of our emerging artists. And we were sure that Member Louis Garrick had prepared a recital that promised to be spectacularly enjoyable. We were, however, unprepared for the quality of the presentation and the intensity of what is a major work – the selected seven scenes from Parsifal arranged by Humperdinck for piano duet, played by Chad Vindin and Jack Symonds.
The Seven early Songs by Berg, sung by Emma Moore with co-artist Louis Garrick were unknown to many members and proved to be not only delightful but also an insightful interpretation of these delicate Lieder. Emma was clearly on a cloud having just won the Young Performer of the Year awarded by 2MBSFM. The teaser, the Pilgrim’s Chorus from Tannhauser arranged for piano duet was enjoyable.
The audience of 50 members was enthralled by the quality of the performances and the intensity of the readings given by these young performers. Many members commented later that ‘we must have more of these events’.
This event was an early presentation of the newly formed Sydney University Opera Company. Louis advised that two operas are planned next year – details to follow.
In the meantime the Opera Company is presenting an ‘evening of art song’ on Friday 23 October at Sydney Conservatorium of Music at 7 pm. Emma Moore (soprano) and Morgan Pearse (baritone) will sing Lieder by Wolf, Mahler and Zemlinsky and art songs by Debussy, Ravel, Finzi and Chris Williams. Tickets ($20 and $10 for students) will be available at the door.
